Curitiba a model in sustainable development
Curitiba was ahead of it times implementing sustainable urban solutions. As such the city was able to void many problems facing most the worlds majors cities. Amount Brazilian cities Curitiba is uquine for lack squatter settlements known as Fevela. Certainly the success of Curitiba providing affordable housing, multitude of green space, options efficient cheap public transit system make Curitiba the envy of both developing and develop cities worldwide. But, Curitibia’s success was far enviable. Up unlit the mid 1970’s Curitiba was much like any typical crowned Brazilian city. However, unlike most cities of world the cities government realized economic social development of city must occur side by side. As such the city attempted to develop human originated solutions to city problems.
My thoughts: Curitiba
Represent a model that used to develop cities in both the developed and developing world. While every city is unique Curitiba size makes it sustainable initiative is make the city promising model. Most cities that have large scale stainable success have small. They critized saying plans become complicated on a granter scale. Allen Jacobs professor of regional planning at University of California Berkley describes Curbitia success due to ability to “create a city of human interaction”. Personally as look around own quiet city suburb I see a city built economic and utility lacking the sense of community and reaction Jacob speaks of. BTR: The transportation solution for the mid size city paradox . Curitiba was leader in development of BTR (Bus Rapid transit). In doing the city found great solution city not rich or dense enough metro system. Typically such city are forced to relay on bus primary means public transportation. This has created problems for many cities around the world bus relay traffic patterns often making unreliable such subject to delays. This problematic as it makes bus transit undesirable leading only the cities poor use public transit and primary means of transportation. This creates two problem that provide near in intractable for many cities in both developed and developing countries. First lack public transit use creates high rates traffic makes bus service even less reliable. Second with only poor using the bus system political to solve the problem is minimal. Thus, get worst over time. BTR solves creating special specific stop for bus creating specially lanes. This allows cities achieve similar benefits of having a metro system without the high price that usually make metro system uneconomical for most cities.
